Curtis Thompson Obituary, Death Cause – On July 27, 2023 in Newport News, Virginia, Cold War submarine veteran Curtis Lee Thompson, 68, died away quietly. He was a man who was well-known for his undying commitment to his country, family, and friends. He was born on January 30, 1955, in Butler, Pennsylvania. Curtis was a Moniteau High School alum. He volunteered for submarine duty when he joined the US Navy in 1975 after graduating. He served with distinction for 27 years before retiring in 2002 as a senior chief petty officer. His commitment to serving his country continued in the civilian world as he worked for the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).
Curtis was involved in his community in addition to his career. He was an ardent supporter of the Next Level Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the U.S. Submarine Veterans Association. Curtis enjoyed playing cards at the Villas on Shady Banks and was a well-known figure at St. George’s Brewery. He and his wife Marilyn enjoyed taking regular Caribbean cruises, and he treasured time spent with their devoted dog, Jett. In addition to his wife Marilyn Marie Sharp Thompson, Curtis is also survived by his son Joshua (Jessica) Thompson of Yorktown, his mother Florence I.

Stone Thompson, his sisters Cheryl (Tom) Cherry and Terri (Rick) Wagner of West Sunbury, Pennsylvania, and his brothers Bret (Melissa) Thompson of Huntsville, Texas, Vernon (Linda) Thompson of West Sunbury, and Neal (Bobby) Thompson of Wesley Chapel, Florida. His brothers Darryl and Keith, as well as his father Robert E. Thompson, predeceased him. On the USS James Madison (SSBN-627) in 1977, Curt earned his submarine qualification. He was an MMCS(SS) when he departed the Navy. He belonged to the USSVI’s Hampton Roads Base. REST YOUR OARS, SAILOR
